“His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

(Lamentations 3:22-23)

Dear Friends,

We can say a hearty "Amen" to that passage as we look back over 2018. In changing situations, it's wonderful to remember that God is totally faithful! Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for us.

Since our last letter, we have moved from Le Havre to the centre of France. We now live in Yzeure, just next to the county town of Moulins. After several visits during the year, we have found a comfortable flat, overlooking a park with beautiful trees, ponds and a variety of bird life. Not at all like our busy street in Le Havre! We thank God for the peace that we enjoy here. We also hope to see more of our family, now within reasonable driving distance. Jonathan and Priscille are expecting their first child early next year, so we look forward to having a new grandchild, God willing. The other grand-children, aged between 4 and 14, are all excited at the thought of a baby in the family again!

The church in Le Havre is doing quite well, with a good team of committed Christians to carry on the work. Two elders were appointed in September, a real step forward. A new youth work has also been started. Sadly, the young woman we've mentioned before as having cancer is not at all well: please keep praying for her and her husband (one of the new elders). She is still keen to serve as her strength allows, and is a real inspiration to all around.

Here, we've been made very welcome by the church in Moulins, and we look forward to continuing missionary service in our new situation. We moved here in October, and are looking to the Lord for the best ways to serve in the church, in consultation with the elders. We're enjoying getting to know the Christians in the fellowship, and are also seeking to establish good relationships with our neighbours and to share the gospel with them. The church has planned a special outreach service for this Saturday evening, in the form of a buffet supper at which Allan has been asked to speak on the meaning of Christmas. Please pray that the message will be clear and that listeners will be challenged in their thinking.

Since he now has less responsibility in the local church, Allan can concentrate better on editing the French assemblies' gospel calendar. At the moment he's busy correcting and revising contributions for the 2020 edition, and hopes to be able to complete the task in February without the stressful rush of past years! Please pray that Christians will make good use of the 2019 calendars as aids to witness, and that God will speak to those who read them. About 26,000 copies have been printed, while digital and audio versions are also freely available by internet.

Praise God for Christian music! Last March, the "Beast from the East" delayed Anne by several days after a visit to her mother in Lanark. Eventually a flight to Paris was available, but that was also delayed, and Anne was wondering when she'd get back! While waiting in Glasgow Airport for news of the flight she hoped to leave on, she was amazed to hear a Welsh choir singing "Guide me, O thou great Jehovah", followed by a soprano soloist singing "How great thou art". "Songs of Praise" on the television in the departure lounge, just at the right time for Anne's encouragement! We had another surprise on the day we finally received the keys to our flat in Yzeure, after several months of uncertainty as we looked for accommodation. In the middle of lunch in a fast-food restaurant we heard, sung in English over the public address system, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow"! Coincidence? No, God knows how to encourage His children!

On that note, we wish you a very happy Christmas. And may we all continue to trust our faithful God throughout the coming New Year. His mercies never fail!
